Esmir Filho is a screenwriter, director, and producer, awarded the Brazilian Academy of Letters Film Prize in 2012. Recognized for addressing contemporary themes through universal narratives—combining experimental language with commercial appeal—he is currently preparing the release of the biopic of singer Ney Matogrosso, Homem com H, for which he serves as both writer and director.
His series Boca a Boca, which he created and showran, premiered on Netflix in 2020 and reached the platform’s Top 10. With his first feature film, The Famous and the Dead (Os Famosos e os Duendes da Morte, 2009), he won the Festival do Rio and was part of the official competition at the Locarno and Berlin film festivals, earning awards for Best Film, Direction, and Critics’ Prize in Havana, Valdivia, and Guadalajara.
In television, he created and served as head director for programs such as Viva Voz, Na Trilha da Canção, and Calada Noite com Sarah Oliveira on GNT, which reached an audience of over 12 million viewers.
His short film Alguma Coisa Assim (2006) won Best Screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival and later became a Brazil–Germany co-produced feature film in 2018, while Saliva (2007) was Brazil’s representative in the Oscar race for Best Live Action Short Film.
He is also co-creator of the internet hit Tapa na Pantera, an iconic short film with over 10 million views on YouTube. In 2020, he released the film Verlust, a Brazil–Uruguay co-production with Globo Filmes.
